This story was corrected after publication (Oct. 9, 2026). Details

The executive order signed on September 18 calls for a group of experts to convene and, within two months, produce a plan to strengthen the state’s AI safety laws. It urges the group to consider an emergency kill switch that would shut down frontier AI models if something went badly wrong. Two more proposals sit alongside it: independent organizations drawing up comprehensive safety plans for AI companies, and those organizations embedding on site to run audits.

Corrections and updates

  1. The version first posted on Instagram said the kill switch would shut down any AI system. The executive order limits it to frontier models; the text has been corrected.
