By Anthropic’s count, robots can technically perform about three-quarters of the physical tasks in US jobs
According to Anthropic’s “What work can robots do?” report, published September 30, today’s robots can perform 74% of physical tasks in the US, which make up 34% of working hours. The researchers had Claude score about 19,000 tasks from the O*NET database and counted only robot capabilities proven through deployments, commercial sales or demonstrations. But most of these tasks can only be done in purpose-built settings like factories; in unstructured places like city streets the share is 2%. Robots are cost-competitive with people for just 0.3% of job tasks. If prices keep falling at past rates, it will take 40 years for that share to reach 10%.
