NPR: Some US voters are consulting AI chatbots to choose which candidate to vote for
Some Americans who have started voting in the midterms are turning to chatbots to research candidates and make up their minds, NPR reported on October 4. Adam Johnson, an illustrator in West Virginia, uses ChatGPT for the election too, but warns: “ChatGPT is just kind of a people-pleaser… whatever you lean towards, it will speak positively about it.” Tyler Black in Tennessee checks several chatbots against each other to catch made-up information. Lisa Veldran in Wisconsin used Gemini to compare Democratic candidates for governor in the primary. Johns Hopkins fellow Rafael Batista warned that chatbots can reinforce existing beliefs, leaving people “more confident without necessarily learning more.”
