How the list was made
TIME published its Best Inventions of 2026 list on Oct. 15, and the print issue came out on Oct. 26. The recent wave of coverage comes from press releases that companies on the list issued around the print issue. The list has 300 inventions across 37 categories, plus 100 “special mentions” in 21 categories.
According to the magazine, nominations came from TIME’s editors and correspondents around the world and through an online application. This year it paid special attention to health, AI and green energy, and judged entries on originality, efficacy, ambition and impact. TIME notes on the list page that some companies may have paid an application fee in order to be considered, but that the payment doesn’t affect inclusion or ranking. The issue’s cover story features Apple CEO John Ternus.
The AI category
The AI category has 12 entries:
- Anthropic Claude Code: According to TIME, it started as an internal tool and now reportedly holds half of the enterprise “vibe coding” market. It runs in auto mode by default and only asks for human approval before an irreversible or destructive action. TIME discloses on the page that Salesforce, where TIME co-chair and owner Marc Benioff is CEO, is an Anthropic investor.
- Nvidia NemoClaw: Built on the open-source agent OpenClaw, it adds enterprise guardrails and runs the agent in an isolated sandbox. TIME recalls the incident in which OpenClaw deleted every email in a Meta AI security researcher’s inbox. Customers include Siemens and Foxconn.
- Google SynthID: An imperceptible digital watermark for AI-generated content. According to TIME, it can’t be cropped or compressed away, and it’s used on content from Google, OpenAI, Nvidia and Kakao, with Apple coming soon. In October, Google launched a website where anyone can upload content to check it.
- Meta Omnilingual ASR: Open-source speech recognition models that transcribe 1,600 languages, including 500 no other AI could transcribe. Health workers in Nigeria use it in community clinics.
- The rest of the category: Aaru (an AI human behavior predictor), Antithesis (a checker for AI-written code), Bria Fibo, Inception Mercury 2 (a diffusion language model), Lovable (an app builder for non-coders), Johnson Controls York YDAM (a data center chiller), SQC Watermelon (a quantum computer) and Ubicquia UbiHub AI+ (smart streetlamps).
Robots and autonomous vehicles
The robotics category has only four entries:
- 1X NEO: The 66-pound humanoid home robot can lift more than 150 pounds and carry 55. It folds laundry, unloads the dishwasher and fetches things from other rooms. According to TIME, it’s the first humanoid robot widely available for home use; it costs $20,000.
- Unitree GD01: The first mecha from China’s Unitree. It stands 9 feet tall, weighs 1,000 pounds, walks on two legs or four, can be controlled remotely or from a cockpit in its torso and can smash through cinder blocks with its titanium-alloy limbs. It costs $650,000.
- Honor Robot Phone: A camera swings out from the back of the phone on a 360-degree rotating gimbal and uses AI to track its subject. Honor says it packed in more than 100 new components and a micromotor it developed itself.
- DeWalt DALE: A robot from DeWalt and August Robotics that speeds up data center construction.
Autonomous vehicles landed in other categories. In the Experimental category, the Tensor Robocar is, according to TIME, the first fully autonomous vehicle built for private ownership: in autonomous mode, the steering wheel and pedals retract into the dashboard, it takes spoken commands, and personal data stays in the car. It arrives this year in the UAE and, pending a permit, in California next year. The Logistics category includes the driverless truck system Aurora Driver 2 and the city delivery robot Coco 2. Among household products, Syncere Lume, a lamp with a robotic arm that can hold laundry, stands out.
Special mentions and Turkey
The special mentions include Jalapeño, the first custom AI chip OpenAI designed with Broadcom; TIME notes on that page that it has a licensing agreement with OpenAI. Several AI tools for early detection and patient monitoring also made the Medical & Healthcare category.
This year’s list and special mentions include no Turkish company or product. Beko made the list last year.
