Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon says some AI companies want phones that can run models of at least 100 billion parameters by 2028
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said some AI companies are asking Qualcomm for the ability to run a model of at least 100 billion parameters on a phone by 2028. The remarks came in an episode of Alex Heath’s Sources podcast published October 8 and recorded live at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, which opened September 22.
“I have to be careful not to disclose names, but some AI companies right now, some of the companies at the forefront of AI are telling Qualcomm, by 2028, I need to make sure that I have the ability to run at least a hundred billion parameter model into a phone,” Amon said, according to the episode transcript, adding that the companies want it “running kind of all the time.” Amon presented this as a customer request and said AI companies are starting to make phones. Amon also expects AI agents to drive a new smartphone upgrade cycle.
