Sweden’s Government Offices (Regeringskansliet), which support the prime minister and the ministries, are blocking ChatGPT and Claude on staff work computers starting Monday, October 26. The news was first reported by Ekot, the news service of public broadcaster Sveriges Radio. Microsoft Copilot is the only approved AI tool. According to Decrypt, Copilot went through a dedicated security review, after which its security settings were tightened.
Mikael Wettercrantz, the director of digitalisation, wrote on the staff intranet that using AI services without a formal contract can have consequences for information security. He added that there had been several examples of problematic use of open AI services. Some employees will still be able to reach both tools through an AI platform the Government Offices built in-house. The press office has not said how many people that covers.
According to the reports, the Swedish Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care (SiS) have imposed similar blocks, and the Enforcement Authority is preparing its own decision. Decrypt notes that Microsoft added Claude models to Copilot in early 2026. The Government Offices have not confirmed whether those models are enabled in their own Copilot. The European Parliament disabled AI features on its work devices in February.
