Stripe bought AI model marketplace OpenRouter for $8 billion. Nvidia was reportedly getting ready to make a last-minute counteroffer
Stripe announced on August 19 that it had agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a marketplace that routes requests across more than 400 AI models. The price was not disclosed, but Axios put the cash and stock deal above $8 billion. According to The Information, which cited sources on October 7, Nvidia learned in July that Databricks and Stripe were already in talks with OpenRouter. Nvidia told OpenRouter’s leadership it was prepared to make a generous counteroffer but needed more time. OpenRouter declined to wait, and Nvidia never submitted a formal bid. In September, Nvidia agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion.
