Meta settled the child safety case for $17 billion
Meta settled the lawsuit brought by 29 states on August 26. The payment runs up to $17 billion, spread over ten years.
The trial had opened in Oakland on August 18. It didn’t last a week.
The states argued that Meta deliberately designed Facebook and Instagram to hook children, misled the public about the harms, and improperly collected data from users under 13.
Meta continues to deny wrongdoing.
The money isn’t the important part. The platform changes are.
Under-18 users will be limited to two hours a day on Facebook and Instagram. Access is blocked from midnight to 6am. Notifications stop during school hours.
Around $5 billion of the settlement is conditional: it only applies if YouTube and TikTok settle on similar terms. Meta is publicly calling on its competitors to join, saying it won’t work unless they all line up behind it.
An independent auditor will review compliance annually. But only for five years, against a ten-year agreement.
The number needs context.
Investors had modeled penalties reaching $1.4 trillion if the case went to a jury verdict. Against that, $17 billion looks small.
Spread across ten years it works out to roughly 1% of Meta’s expected revenue over the same period. The company said it will take a $10 billion charge this quarter but that its financial guidance won’t change.
Even so, Axios calls it social media’s version of the 1990s tobacco settlement.
