Geoffrey Hinton used his Nobel banquet speech to warn about the dangers of AI
Geoffrey Hinton won a Nobel for his AI work, then spent his banquet speech warning about AI.
Known as the “Godfather of AI,” Hinton shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics with John Hopfield. In his speech at the Nobel banquet in Stockholm on December 10, 2024, he said AI could raise productivity in almost every industry but already brings short-term risks: echo chambers, mass surveillance, phishing attacks, new viruses and weapons that decide on their own who to kill.
He named a longer-term threat too: digital beings smarter than us. “We have no idea whether we can stay in control,” he said, adding that if companies chasing short-term profits create them, “our safety will not be the top priority.”
