GitHub moved the Copilot runtime to Rust using its own agents
Disclosed on September 16: the agent runtime that ran on TypeScript and Node.js was rewritten into more than 800,000 lines of production Rust, most of it written by AI agents. As of August 21 there were 832,378 lines of production Rust, and about 430,000 lines of TypeScript were removed. The work spanned 128 pull requests, more than 135 releases and 14.5 weeks. The cost was roughly $120,000 in tokens plus three weeks of one developer’s time.
