ByteDance’s video editor CapCut announces a plugin that will run inside ChatGPT

CapCut, the video editing app owned by ByteDance, announced on October 24 at its CapCut World event in Los Angeles that a plugin for ChatGPT is coming soon. According to the company’s post on X, the plugin brings CapCut’s video editing and generation tools into ChatGPT. Users develop an idea in ChatGPT, create the video with the CapCut plugin without leaving the chat, and can then move the draft to CapCut’s web editor to refine, share and publish.

CapCut’s press release says that once the plugin assembles a first cut, revisions can be requested in conversation, such as holding a shot longer, making captions easier to read or keeping music underneath a voiceover. Users can also make hands-on edits and continue the conversation with that change understood. The release says the plugin will arrive “in the coming months,” while the company’s promo says an open beta will be available across mobile, desktop and web in November.

More than 300 creators and partners attended the event. CapCut also introduced an updated EditPilot for prompt-based editing on desktop and a pilot of a more agentic creation experience. It is piloting a transparency tool that shows whether content was made with AI tools from CapCut, Dreamina, Pippit or Hypic. CapCut says it serves more than 700 million users a month. No pricing or regional availability was given for the plugin, and no statement from OpenAI could be found.
