Brookings: US AI infrastructure investment will reach $10.3 trillion by 2032
According to a paper by Columbia’s Stijn Van Nieuwerburgh, presented at the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, $10.3 trillion will go into data center buildings, power systems, networking and chips between 2025 and 2032. That averages 3.63% of US GDP a year, larger than the canal, railroad, electrification, highway and telecom booms. The real warning is about financing: risk is moving off corporate balance sheets into joint ventures, private credit, securitization and lease commitments. Van Nieuwerburgh says these structures may hide correlated exposures before a downturn, and that measurement and transparency should come first.
