Blue Cross: AI-written medical records added $942 million to insurance costs
A Blue Cross Blue Shield Association report found that a sharp rise in patients being documented as having complex conditions added an estimated $942 million in spending for BCBS companies between 2023 and 2025. About 70% of the extra cost, more than $650 million, came from secondary diagnoses. The core finding: coding changed, but there is no matching change in the care delivered. Hospitals recorded notably more anemia diagnoses, for instance, without a corresponding rise in transfusions. The American Hospital Association argues the increase can reflect older, sicker patients and more accurate documentation.
