Harvey, Abridge and Ramp moved from frontier lab APIs to open-weight models
According to Bloomberg, cost pressure forced the change. At legal AI company Harvey, margins fell from about 50% to minus 50% after token usage rose twentyfold this year following a March update. It was selling a fixed annual seat while buying a metered input, and agents broke that ratio. Margins turned positive again after Harvey trained its own model on Moonshot’s open-weight Kimi K3 in August. Abridge is building a clinical model on Nvidia’s open weights, and Ramp is weighing training for the first time.
