The US 10-year Treasury yield is at its highest since 2007, and AI borrowing is among the reasons

This story was updated after publication (Oct. 9, 2026). Details

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury rose to 5.23% last week, its highest level since 2007. There is no single cause: sticky inflation, expectations of another Fed hike and heavy government borrowing are all at work. AI comes in on the supply side: Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft and Oracle issued about $132 billion of bonds through July, against an annual average of $35 billion from 2020 to 2024. Including data center, chip and utility companies, AI-related borrowing could reach $300 billion to $570 billion this year. That much new debt coming to market pushes yields higher.
