The University of Cambridge rejected Turnitin’s new terms because student work could be used to train AI

Published: 2 sourcesTürkçe

According to student newspaper Varsity, which reported it on October 2, the University of Cambridge refused in July to sign Turnitin’s new user agreement. The plagiarism-detection company’s new terms opened the door to student work being used for “improving or developing AI tools.” Cambridge’s students’ union says it was the first university to refuse. The university said it will not accept any change that affects data privacy or intellectual property. Turnitin has postponed the new agreement to September 2027; until then Cambridge stays on the old terms and is exploring alternatives. Turnitin, for its part, says it does not train generative AI models on student data.
