This story was corrected after publication (Oct. 9, 2026). Details

A Tesla Model S Plaid was doing 286 km/h (178 mph) on the Autobahn when a rear tire came apart. The car was destroyed, but the driver survived.

The crash was recorded by the driver’s own in-car camera. According to the driver, the rear tire’s tread separated. A batch of 69 Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperSport tires of the same model was recalled in the US in April 2026 for tread separation; it has not been confirmed that the tire in the crash came from that batch. The driver says they only learned about the recall after the crash. No independent investigation has confirmed the cause yet.
