Figure taught its retired robots to jump into a furnace of molten steel on their own.

With its F.03 fleet growing, Figure melted its old F.02 robots in a 75-ton electric arc furnace in Imatra, Finland. The robots trained in simulation, then by jumping onto airbags, and leapt into the furnace using their own AI models. Figure wanted to protect its proprietary hardware, and taking each robot apart would have delayed F.04. Melting them was Arnold Schwarzenegger’s idea. Foundries in the US and Mexico refused because of the lithium-ion batteries inside.

Figure CEO Brett Adcock also shared behind-the-scenes footage of the process.
