British Columbia sued OpenAI and Altman over a school attack
The Canadian province sued OpenAI and Sam Altman in California over the February 10 attack in Tumbler Ridge in which eight people died. The claim is that OpenAI’s safety team flagged the attacker over conversations about gun violence and recommended contacting police, but that senior figures rejected the step. The province and the school district are seeking the costs of the emergency response and of rebuilding the school, plus a court order changing how the company handles conversations that threaten violence. In April Altman wrote to the community saying he was deeply sorry the company had not contacted law enforcement.
