Anthropic just committed $45 billion more to compute
This story was corrected after publication (Oct. 9, 2026). Details
According to Bloomberg, confirmed by CNBC, Anthropic will pay UK-based Nscale roughly $45 billion over six years.
In return it rents 460 megawatts of compute at the Monarch campus in West Virginia, running on Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips. The site comes online at the end of 2027.
460 megawatts is enough electricity for around 345,000 US homes at any one time.
Anthropic isn’t buying the facility. It’s renting capacity.
This isn’t a standalone deal. It’s the latest in a run of them.
A 20-year, $9.1 billion agreement with Riot Platforms. A 20-year lease with TeraWulf in Kentucky worth around $19 billion. A six-year, $10 billion contract with Volta in Norway. And now $45 billion with Nscale.
The company has committed to renting more than 10 gigawatts of servers from cloud providers, and has signed more than a dozen letters of intent for data center leases.
Anthropic itself said this year that rising demand had put “inevitable strain” on its infrastructure, affecting reliability and performance.
Bloomberg says the deal is part of an effort to secure capacity ahead of going public.
Anthropic is preparing to go public, with investors expecting a valuation of $2 trillion or more. Its annualized revenue passed $65 billion in July.
Monarch is a site of up to 2,250 acres with long-term potential of 8 gigawatts, drawing power from its own on-site microgrid rather than the local grid.
Nscale itself was founded in 2024 and is preparing for its own IPO.
