Anthropic is running a lab that does biology experiments in the Bay Area
This story was corrected after publication (Oct. 9, 2026). Details
Eric Kauderer-Abrams, the company’s head of life sciences, confirmed it to Reuters and said the final test in biology is still real lab work. The goal is for Claude to direct automated lab equipment under human supervision. The lab sits on top of Coefficient Bio, bought in April for roughly $400 million in stock. Anthropic says the focus is fundamental biology rather than drug discovery, and has not disclosed the lab’s size, staff, opening date or biosafety level.
