A judge dismissed the antitrust suits filed over Google’s AI Overviews: “An expectation is not an agreement”
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington on September 30 dismissed the suits that ed-tech company Chegg and Penske Media, owner of Rolling Stone, Variety and Billboard, filed against Google in 2025. They argued Google used its search monopoly to force publishers to hand over their content for free to AI Overviews, draining their traffic and revenue. Mehta wrote: “Plaintiffs have pleaded only that they have an ‘expectation’ that Google will send them search traffic if they make their content available for free. But an expectation is not an agreement. It is simply how a general search engine works.” In his view, the disruption new technology brings is a matter for lawmakers.
